This painting was done in 2024 after the artist’s niece paraded in her first “Super Sunday,” a major event in New Orleans culture when the Mardi Gras Indians take to the streets—parading, strutting, and posing—showing off their suits that have taken a year to make and dancing to the rhythms of the drums and chanting classic New Orleans anthems for celebration. Sarah Griffin Thibodeaux wanted to commemorate this moment as a point of personal pride, of African American pride, and of the family love that supersedes all color lines.
